Berlin has got several scouts-like youth movements, and the list newly includes also Hashomer Hatzair, a movement that combines some fun activities with values and traditions that are linked to the older Hashomer Hatzair Movement.
What does Hashomer Hatzair offer?
In general, Hashomer Hatzair is a scouting youth movement with a socialist and Jewish (secular) orientation, a sister-movement to the German Falken (Falcons, a smiliar British youth movement is supposedly one I am not familiar with, but you might be - The Woodcraft Folk).
However, if this might sound a bit old-fashioned and heavily political, the activities are rather entertaining social gatherings that include games fun, and yes - also a bit of Jewish heritage and discussion of social issues.
In addition to the regular activities, once every two weeks, there are also summer camps, trips and other activities. The activities take place in the centre of Berlin in the Alexanderplatz area, where the movement has a permanent "nest" (see small dictionary below), and sometimes in other places in the city - a visit to a museum, a farm or something similar.
What ages is it for?
There are currently three groups for the regular activities (Peulot; with the intention of expanding in the near future):
- A children group aged 8 and up
- A youth group for kids aged 12-14
- The Ken's leadership training group, for kids aged 15 and older
- How much does it cost?
- My child is not Jewish according to Halacha (or at all), does not speak Hebrew well (or at all) and / or we are not Zionist-Socialist-Jews
- We are not from the Berlin area!
