It is the first Advent Weekend. Markets are all over the city and the choice is hard!

Activities for Families and other Berliners, 20-22 November


Market of the Continents 

The Christmas Markets begin after this Sunday, which is an official mourning day (called "Totensonntag", Sunday of the Dead). Please note: on the 22nd, flea markets will be closed.

However, you can still start your season with "Market of the Continents" in the Dahlem Museums. The Market (Sat/Sunday) is devoted each week to a specific continent, with music, gifts, food and activities linked to the continent.

  • The Winter World in Potsdamer Platz, until January 3rd. Closed on this Sunday (Totensonntag) but open all week long otherwise. 



  • Bazaar Berlin in the Messe Halle (S Messe Nord or S Messe Sued) includes all kinds of exotic goods. There is an admission fee (Fri/Sat/Sun) 



  • Arena in Treptow have a "Winter Village" with an ice skating rink, stalls for food etc. (Fri/Sat/Sun) [U Schlesische Tor or S Treptow Park and then walk or take the bus for a couple of stops] 
  • FEZ have a puppet theatre festival on Sat/Sun .  Address: Straße zum FEZ 2, 12459 Berlin ; Transport: Tram 63, 27 or 67 to Freizeit- und Erholungszentrum or S3 Train to Wuhlheide. Admission applies. 
  • Fidelio for kids in the Philharmonie, Saturday 3:30 pm
  • The World Championship in Cheerleading, Max-Schmelling-Halle on Sat and Sun 

  • And a Bambini Run at the Tempelhof Airport, on Sunday at 10:00

Events for Families in Berlin, November 13th - 15th

Volkstrauerstag - German Memorial Day

Volkstrauerstag is a national memorial day, originally meant to commemorate the fallen in the First World War. The law places "Tanzverbot" on this day, literally a prohibition of parties, but basically no flea markets, fairs and similar activities. 

Still - lots to do in the city, also at this weekend. 

For Example... 

  • The Winter World in Potsdamer Platz, until January 3rd. Closed on this Sunday (Volkstrauertag) but open all week long otherwise, including this Saturday. 


  • Haus am Waldsee with a Family Day, Sat 2 - 5 pm 
  • Also the Musical Instruments Museum (Ben-Gurion-Straße, 10785 Berlin) has a "Family Day", with guitar experiments for children and a concert (S/U Potsdamer Platz, Bus 200 at Philharmonie). Sunday, most of the day. 
  •  The Frei Zeit Haus in Weissensee will run its Family Sunday, with crafts, baking and African legends (in German) . details

  • "Winterdorf" (Winter Village) at the Arena in Treptow, including a skating rink, Sa/Su from noonish. 
  • And the Markthalle IX does its Breakfast Market this Sunday...

Events for Families in Berlin, November 6th - 8th

Winter World in Potsdamer Platz


With all of the excitement of Halloween, I have forgotten about it last week: The Winter World is a fair in Potsdamer Platz, that includes all kinds of winter sport rides (some like the ice rink, are for free if you bring your own skates). Of course there is Gluehwein and other delicacies. Open every day till January 3rd, excluding November 15th (Volkstrauertag) and November 22nd (Totensonntag).

  • Saturday: Open day for families at the Klingendes Museum. Behmstraße 13 13357 Berlin-Gesundbrunnen 
  • Sunday: Children opera, "Snow White and the 77 Dwarves", at the Komische Oper (details), for kids aged from 6

  • Sunday in the Maerkisches Museum: Activity for the whole family following "Emil and the Detectives", from 11:00 
  • Frog Prince in the Jagdschloss Grunewald, Sunday at 3 pm 

Jewish Cultural Events

Mitzvah Day 2015 will be marked by the Fraenkelufer Synagogue and Bambinim with a day filled with activities to help asylum seekers here in Berlin. On Sunday, the 8th, from 10 am, volunteers from the synagogue and Bambinim kids, coupled with kids and activists from the Morus14 Youth Centre, will travel to an asylum-seekers' residence in Wilmersdorf, where there will be activities for children (residents of the Home as well as "guest" children from Bambinim and Morus14) and assistance to adults. Also - a Hanukkah Bazaar (yes, more than a month before), at the Fasanenstr. 79 JCC, to benefit the Pestalozzistrasse Synagogue. Sunday, 12 - 6 pm
