Berlin Weekly Highlights: Jan 2 – Jan 8, 2026 🎉

Happy New Year to all my readers! 🥂 If you are still shaking off the confetti, here is a quick guide to what’s happening in the city this week, from the last sip of Glühwein to community meetups.

🎄 Last Call for Christmas Markets

This weekend is officially the end of the holiday season. Most remaining markets close on January 4th, so grab one last Glühwein or roasted almond:

  • Wintermarkt am Schlossplatz: Beautiful atmosphere right next to the Humboldt Forum.

  • Gedächtniskirche: The market in the west of the city (near the KaDeWe and the Broken Church) is also open until January 4th

  • Glühwald on Uber Platz: The "Glühwein Forest" opposite the East Side Gallery is open until January 4th.

  • Lights in the Gardens: The Christmas Garden in the Botanical Gardens is open until January 11th, as is Weihnachten im Tierpark (in the zoo in the east) which is open until January 10th.

  • Lichterzauber in Beelitz: If you fancy getting out of town, the magical festival of lights in the Beelitz park is open this weekend (January 2-4) and next weekend (starting January 8th). It's worth booking your tickets in advance!

🎁 The Unwanted Gift Exchange and other post holiday events

  • Sunday, Jan 4: Got a third pair of socks from Aunt Helga? The Museum of European Cultures (MEK) in Dahlem is hosting its traditional Gift Exchange Market (14:00-16:00). Bring your disappointing gifts and trade them for something better! (info)

✡ Community Oriented

  • The Collective Meetup (Thursday, Jan 8): A gathering for the Israeli community (ages 20-35). A great chance to mingle and meet new friends. Details here.

  • Jewish Museum Tours (Jan 3 & 4): Guided tours of the permanent exhibition, focusing on the "After 1945" era. Available in English and German.

  • Jewish Berlin Tour - Every day, by appointment here

🎭 Culture & Geeky Fun

  • Tolkien Concert (Monday, Jan 5): Calling all Lord of the Rings fans! A grand concert featuring the music from the movies will take place at the Philharmonie at 20:00. (details)

  • Alice in Wonderland (Sunday, Jan 4): An immersive exhibition at Reinbeckhallen. Dive into Lewis Carroll's world with 360-degree projections. Great for a visual escape from the grey weather. (ticket giveaway on Rausgegeangen / tickets

Have a wonderful first week of 2026! ❄️
